On Thanksgiving Day, Carpenter’s Shelter at 930 North Henry Street in Alexandria, Virginia served a traditional feast for residents, consisting of turkey, gravy, potato salad, green beans, and other holiday favorites.
In addition to the feast for in-house clients, meals were also prepared for and delivered to previous residents who had recently obtained housing. Success and happiness beyond housing is a priority for the staff. Lawrence Smith, a caseworker at Carpenter’s Shelter, said that he enjoys “seeing those residents gain employment, stability, and housing.”
Residents’ children were also given a Thanksgiving celebration of their very own. Volunteers guided activities such as making a banner and writing down what everyone was thankful for.
Recognized by Alexandria Chamber of Commerce as the 2015 Non-Profit of the Year, Carpenter’s Shelter serves over 750 homeless and formerly homeless Americans every year.
