On the morning of Saturday, May 28, activists and advocates gathered at the capital building for the day-long “Summerhaven Stand Down” event for homeless veterans, which included the first annual “March 4 Veterans Rights.” The group marched to the Washington Monument and set up tables for veteran service providers at the neighboring Sylvan Theater. 30 veteran service providers signed on for the resource fair, according to a press release from the nonprofit America’s Vets For Life. “We seek to establish a strong national awareness of the plight of our Nations’ Veterans and the obstacles they endure just to live a normal life,” wrote the organization’s vice president, George C. Horton, Jr. According to the release, these issues include homelessness, unemployment, slow processing of Veterans Affairs claims, substandard education support, inadequate healthcare and sexual trauma both in and out of the military.
