How long have you been homeless?

I have been homeless since 1994, so for about nine years. I fell into homelessness for several reasons, in part due to a no-good landlord. I stayed with a friend for a while and have been in the shelter for about four months.

What do you think is the most pressing issue facing the homeless in Washington D.C.?

Unfair housing and unfair rent issues; without any help from social services, it is nearly impossible to find an affordable place to live here. I remember a lady coming to the MLK Library who was talking about misappropriation of funds for helping the homeless; now they are closing the shelters and people are feeling so much more pressure. One guy already died in my shelter in the beginning of the winter.

Where would you like to see yourself five years from now?

Five years from now, I would like to have stable housing and be able to have my children with me so I could raise them. It is not easy raising children. As long as I maintain work, I’ll be alright.

Why do you sell Street Sense?

I sell it because I think it is a great thing; it is very informative and gives many people a chance to understand why homelessness is such a big problem. Also, this helps homeless people who need to know where to go for services. I think this paper will grow so that people will be looking for it every week, and then everyday. I also like meeting so many people, and so many people enjoy reading this paper.

Are there any goals that you have that you are working towards?

I’d like to be a good father to my children; to continue my journey with Bible study and obey the law and stay out of trouble.

What advice would you give to anyone who is currently homeless?

Seek help; stay out of trouble and stay away from drugs and drinking, and your light will shine.

What is your favorite food?

I love fish, particularly whiting.

Favorite movie?

Tombstone.
