Through A Vendor’s Eyes: Donald Brooks

I watch every day as people pass me by, without any acknowledgment of me. They are either, talking on their cell phone, playing on their blackberry, or pretending to be elsewhere while walking.

Many of these individuals I see on a regular basis.  I gladly speak to everyone and sometimes get to know certain individuals by their style of clothing, their hairstyles, their manner of walking or even running. Many of these individuals are some of my most devoted readers.

I watch as many people feel insulated against the possibility of homelessness even though they are in a political city where a change in administration could greatly disrupt their financial and social lives. And then there are others who are surviving day to day, but do not want to accept how close they are to the poverty line and possible homelessness. I watch as tourists who visit our city feel like they are insulated also, even though they realize that their vacation funds have become very limited, and they must budget carefully through the rest of their trip.

I watch how people have developed facades regarding their actual lives.

I watch how the stress and grind show clearly in their faces and bodies as they try to keep up with the pace of life here in this city. I also watch how the people who give back have an easier way about them and accept life at a more peaceable pace.

I watch as these two types of individuals intersect and wonder which one will dominate the other, and which one will fit into society or affect the other.
