The Rabbit and the Dinosaur

Barbara Pollard

Da rabbit and the dino woke up out of a dream.  Or was it a nightmare? The rabbit had asked how the dinosaur became extinct. “What happened to you? Why ain’t you here no more?”

“Well, we had a freeze-over and all our trees were gone and we died. Everything went crazy,” said the dinosaur. “We were all hoppin’ around, much like you, without a care in the world. Tyrannosaurus, Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus… we were all absorbed in our individual lives.”

“Yo, does that mean this could happen to me?” asked the rabbit.

“You can see that I’m extinct, right?” sassed the dino. “Ain’t nobody makin’ it out of here alive. But you’re all going to go a lot sooner if you don’t wake up to what’s goin’ on.”

“Well.. our ecological and economic disasters are ongoing,” admitted the rabbit. “I’m short on leaves and cabbage baby!”

“And why is that?” asked the dino.

“Because we polluted and disrespected our natural world,” said the rabbit.

“Well, at least you still have a little time to fix it,” said the dino. “I never thought I was going to be extinct. But we messed up. I don’t want you to end up like me. You need to stop just hoppin’ around and check this situation now, baby-love.”

“If we knew how to love each other, perhaps this would never have happened,” mused the rabbit. “We’re on limited time, but we have the capacity, potential and opportunity for love – despite all of our artificial differences.

“You’re right — don’t wait till you’re extinct to show love,” said the dino, holding out a cabbage for the rabbit.

“Instead, let love be your legacy.”
