The Monkey and the Turtle

Barbara Pollard

Turtle and Monkey were sitting under a tree.

Turtle: I’ve never tasted a banana before. ‘Cause you know I can’t get up in that tree!

Monkey jumped up the tree and climbed down in the blink of an eye, extending a banana to Turtle.

Turtle: For me? Just like that?!

Monkey: No. I want all of your wisdom, knowledge and experiences in exchange for this banana.

Turtle: Let me get this straight. All I have to do is give you my wisdom, knowledge and experience… and you’ll let me taste that banana?

Monkey: That’s it!

Turtle: But why would you want those anyway?

Monkey: You know how to survive in the ocean. You know how to survive on land. And you outlive almost all the other creatures.

Turtle: …And you’ll let me taste that banana?

Monkey: You bet.

Turtle slowly turned around and began crawling away. Turtle stopped to look back one last time.

Turtle: You’re trying to make a monkey outta me!

A smiling turtle.
