The healthy red cell in an oval circle, while a red blood cell affected by SCD looks like a half moon. Oxygen travels in blood and when cells are not normally shaped, the flow of oxygen is impeded and complications develop. Small blood vessels are blocked and tissue is prevented from getting proper blood flow.

Blood transfusion is a preventative treatment for sickle cell. Please donate blood once a month to help our sickle cell needs. Consider registering for bone marrow donations. Bone marrow transplantation may secure a cure for some with sickle cell disease.
