A Proud Saturday in Washington DC

SOS Walk.org

We walked out in the rain Saturday, September 12, to Stomp out Sickle Cell.

Me having the sickle trait, and aware that the sickle cell trait can trigger death in athletes or anyone during extensive or intense physical exertion raised my interest in the walk.

Extensive or intense physical exertion causes acute rhabdomyolysis, which is muscle breakdown. There has been an amazing number of deaths from “exertional sickling.” It is best to know your sickle cell status. More info is available in “Consensus Statement: Sickle Cell Trait and the Athlete.” Save your Life!

Coming back from the Stomp Out, I stopped by MLK Library and was greeted by the Sing, Talk, Read Family Festival. Learning to sing, talk, and read with your child helps them later in school.

There were door prizes, face painting, safety and public health information.  Free lunches too!

WOW! a proud Saturday in our nation’s capital learning about sickle cell while seeing pretty girls at the DC Library door!
