Service Spotlight: Bread for the City

Food, clothing, medical care, legal services and social services: When the folks at Bread for the City say “comprehensive,” they mean it.

Founded in 1974, Washington, D.C.- based Bread for the City provides the above services to needy area residents in “an atmosphere of dignity and respect,” according to its website. All services are free of cost to eligible D.C. residents, and Bread for the City estimates it helps more than 10,000 people each month. The non-profit also promotes collaboration with community partners.

Last month, Bread for the City completed the expansion of its Northwest Center. The $6.8 million project more than doubles the size of the original facility, and features a new medical clinic.

“We’ll be able to provide more than three times the care,” said Greg Bloom, Bread for the City communications manager, of the new medical center.

Bread for the City also operates a Southeast Center.

The organization will spend 2011 settling into its new digs, and plans to add a rooftop garden to the new facility.

“We have a lot of programs we’re going to be developing further,” Bloom said of upcoming projects
