Pass Social Security Protections

A very important bill just passed the House on Feb. 5 and is headed to the Senate: House Resolution 4547, the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018. This bill was introduced to provide more oversight on the Social Security Administration representative payee program. That’s when an individual is designated to manage another person’s money that they receive from Social Security.

The legislation was created because, in some cases, representative payees have stolen and/or misused funds. People with disabilities have reported abuse and neglect by their payees.

I wrote D.C.’s Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton, and heard back from her office that Norton is eager to work with her colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill.

These laws are very important to people with disabilities, which includes many people experiencing homelessness. People in both communities need support. If you need someone to manage your money, it must be someone you can trust, in order to have a healthy, happy life. If you are able, please contact your representative or senator to let them know how important this legislation is.
