Product of Progression: Overcoming barriers

Housing comes with many barriers. A lot of the time, people ask to hear your story but don’t want to hear the truth. When I became homeless, I begged, borrowed and stole. I don’t justify my actions, nor would I push the blame somewhere else. But my conditions created barriers. Programs to help the homeless are only granted for a short time. When the program runs out, or something else happens, what are the next steps?

I refuse to backslide or have a repetitive outcome. When we adopt bad outlooks, we develop a distasteful connection to those who view us in a different light. But my hunger to bring forth awareness is crucial, and I want to give an untainted perspective of homelessness. I am now working, but am on the streets once again. I know things can get better, and I have not lost my faith, but it is a struggle. I am at the point where my reactions are critical to the next step. We are all entitled to another chance, but what if you would like to make that first time the only time? The struggle is real, and only positive outlooks can keep you afloat in the struggle. In all you do, stay cool, understanding and endure the transition to a better you.

I write this series to show what opportunities exist for people experiencing homelessness and to answer questions you might have about the challenges I have faced, homeless, employed and enrolled in higher education in our nation’s capital.
