I’m Andre, a Street Sense Vendor

Over and over again I ask God, my protector, with fear of no answer, why I am here going through these hard and dangerous times. I sell the Street Sense newspaper at the Friendship Heights Metro station and sometimes at Tenleytown.

I love my Friendship Heights “family” and I truly enjoy selling and meeting my “family” in the morning with a smile. I’ve been told so often that I make people’s day. To my Friendship Heights family of supporters, I say “thank you” with all the gracefulness in my heart.

I want you to know that I support and care for a little girl. Her name is Anyah (or A’n ya?) and she is six years old. I used to see her twice a week but my circumstances have cut these visits short. I am a homeless man but still a father to my kids. Please: racism shows and it needs to stop.

I just found a job at this time. I am currently taking my CDL (Commercial Drivers License). I’ve been on the street four to five years. This is going to be Andre’s year. In a strange way I can discipline myself. Surely I could do other things for money. It’s hard on the streets and very hard to stay focused. Thanks for encouraging me to hang in there. I did.
