Don’t define me by where I sleep

Ian S/Geograph

This summer, a young man approached me while I was selling the Street Sense Media newspaper and asked, “Are you homeless?” I told him, “I prefer not to discuss personal matters.”

I had spent the night in front of a commercial building that I thought was public property. I called the police on a security guard after he demanded I remove my tent immediately, even though it was pouring rain. The officer came and showed me which side of the street was commercial property and which was public property. When the rain stopped, I picked up my tent and my other belongings and moved them onto the public street side.

Then I went back into my tent and called it a night.
