c=mb²: Our Planet

Our dear, beloved planet is very much alive and it relies on its internal, natural resources. These resources in turn provide life for all on this planet, so, when we start to take resources from our planet we not only put our planet at risk, but also all life on this planet.

Hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is a great example of how human beings damage our planet in the constant quest for resources. In fracking, liquid is injected under high pressure into regions of shale rock in order to separate flat pieces of rock and release natural gas. Fracking brings benefits to energy producers while causing long-term environmental damage. Opponents of the process believe that areas where fracking has occurred end up with poisoned groundwater from the injected chemicals, and point to regions of Pennsylvania and Texas as examples. The high pressure is also believed to cause increased seismic activity, such as a series of small quakes experienced in Youngstown, Ohio, in 2011.

It’s not that we need more resources; we need to implement all of our efforts into reducing, reusing, and recycling. There is absolutely nothing human beings can provide for this magnificent, life-giving planet, yet it provides everything human beings need for survival. History has proved again and again when human beings respond without fully understanding our outcomes, these irreversible results become humanity’s deepest regrets.

To paraphrase George Santayana, “The reason why history repeats itself is because we have learned nothing from our history.” But this quote doesn’t even scratch the surface when it comes to the damage to which we are now subjecting our dearly beloved planet. It is when we allow incomprehensible and irreversible damage to our planet and put the human race at risk. We must learn how to better utilize every resource being provided to humanity by our planet called Earth.

If our planet ever needed humanity to stand up for it, the time is now. And it’s going to require all of humanity to end this dire situation confronting our planet.
