Claude and Gussie: An Introduction

There was an older man. He was white, about 60 years old, short in stature, and a doctor. His name was Claude Jefferson. One day he met a 45-year-old black woman named Gussie. She worked as a maid for the rich family up the road a piece. He was 5’4”, solidly built, and a bit overweight at about 175 lbs. Gussie was 5’6” and slim built at about 120 lbs. She had a huge mane of beautiful hair which she kept under a silk scarf in the colors of red, blue, and mauve. He wore hand-tailored suits made by an Italian tailor in town, Giuseppe Franco Manucci. Claude was well off, making about $36,000 a year (which translates to $680,000 today). Gussie, too, made about $36,000 a year.

When they met, the year was 1978…
