Ask Fred

Dear Fred,

What do homeless people do when employers ask for addresses and phone numbers from them, since they don’t have a permanent address or anything?

-In Need of an Address

Dear In Need of an Address,

Many homeless people use their prior address, addresses of friends or relatives and service providers. Some service providers also have voice mail set up for the homeless to receive messages from prospective employers.

Dear Fred,

About how many people are homeless in the District of Columbia and how do this compare to the rest of the country?

-How Many Homeless

Dear How Many Homeless,

According to the Community Partnership for the Prevention Homelessness there’s 10,000 to 15,000 homeless here in the nation’s capital. There are 800,000 homeless on the streets nationwide on any given night and 3.5 million people that are homeless on the streets over the course of a year nationally. Cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, that are larger in land mass and population are much more likely to have bigger homes populations than the District of Columbia.

Dear Fred,

What are the hypothermia shelters that close down April 1 used for during the rest of the year?

-Closed Down

Dear Closed Down,

I would like to thank the various churches and organizations that allow their space to be used as hyperthermia shelters during the winter months. The space could be sued for a number of different things such as storage, classrooms, gyms, offices, etc. These are just some of the things that the space could be used for before and after hypothermia season.
