As Grandparents, We’re All One

As a senior (meaning over 60 years old) congressional reporter at the Capitol, once in a while I find myself in an informal gathering of senators. One day recently, I was in an elevator that opened near the Senate floor. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and several other senior senators stepped in. They were talking about the antics of their little grandchildren and I couldn’t help nodding vigorously, so they asked me about mine. Suddenly, we were just a bunch of proud grandparents bonded by our astounding love for our little descendants.

I was still glowing when I got on a bus to go downtown. A rather shaky-kneed older man got on with a stack of Street Sense newspapers. Being a fellow journalist I bought one and we got to talking.

“Do you have grandchildren?” he asked me suddenly.

“I do, I do,” I said enthusiastically.

“Me too,” he said with a big grin. And off we went. We chatted amiably the rest of the ride about our little adorables … just like with the senators.

Perhaps those who don’t have grandchildren may not understand this, but grandparenthood is a universal bond that transcends everything else! We are all the same.
