The Rainbow Monkey

Barbara Pollard

It loved colors; in the rainbow, in the sky.

Its heart had the same impression, embedded.

It recognized how beautiful life is

And how psychic we are

And that when the rainbow disappears,

They couldn’t wait for the sunshine

To return, to make another rainbow.

All the monkeys were excited

At the barbecue.

Both for the next rainbow and

For the comradery

Among these monkeys of all colors,

Persuasions, personalities, nationalities

Ethnicities, backgrounds,

Sexual preferences, and religious beliefs.

Because after all, we are each

As beautiful

As the rainbow.
