The Changing in D.C.

My name is Ricardo Meriedy. I have lived here for 55 years. When I was a teenager, I couldn’t have imagined the way D.C. has developed over the decades. I love my hometown and I love the people who live here. The reason I say that is because the ones I meet today are white people. I have never been a racist and I am enthused to have my white friends in my life.

Every day when I am out on the corner selling Street Sense, I also see many homeless people. I ask myself: why are so many people out here living on the street? It is sad to see black or white people eating out of trash cans when this is supposed to be the land of the free. If I had the power, no one would be out on the street or hungry. This scenario of homelessness is sad. The District government says it is doing the best it can to help find shelter for the homeless.  If that statement is true, why do I still see so many homeless people when I sell my papers?

Every time I see one of my friends, they encourage me and give me hope. It feels good to have friends to uplift your spirits.
