Looking to Mayor-Elect Bowser for Affordable Housing

Time to get a mayor to put her foot down on this homelessness situation.

I had the chance to talk to Muriel Bowser and ask about her plan to address homelessness. She told me the biggest focus is affordable housing. Instead of building new shelters, she wants to build affordable housing.

Street Sense customers have asked me what is the best way to help the homeless. I tell them that it is hard to live in D.C. with the current price of housing. I was saved off the street by Ted Leonsis and his focus was to help me get back on track until I could get affordable housing. I was on a waiting list for three years. He helped me get an address and be able to afford housing.

When living on the streets, I wasn’t able to get a job or fight for Social Security benefits. It’s hard to keep appointments when you’re on the street. So Ms. Bowser saw that it is important to get affordable housing and not the shelters.

Ms. Bowser has plans for renovating some city property into affordable housing. If you look around the D.C. area you’ll see a lot of properties that could be renovated with the money the city is paying to house homeless families. It will be helpful to the homeless to be housed in places that they can afford. There are a lot of homeless people working that can’t afford housing.

In some research on Ms. Bowser, I found she fought to get help with wheelchair transportation. If you look around, there a a lot of handicapped homeless people in the areas.
