Becoming a Homeowner

I would like to tell about an organization that has helped over 200 Washington, DC families become home owners called Habitat for Humanity of Washington, DC. Their mission is clear, to eliminate poverty and homelessness in the nation’s capital by building affordable, energy and resource-efficient homes for people in need.

A common misconception is that President Jimmy Carter founded Habitat for Humanity. Actually, it was founded by a husband and wife team, Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. However, the President and Mrs. Carter began working with Habitat for Humanity in 1984 and Habitat CEO Jonathan Reckford has said that no one worked harder for the organization. And in 2010, the DC chapter of Habitat was able to raise $1 million in cash and gifts-in-kind thanks to contributions to the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project 2010.

You can become a Habitat homeowner if you meet certain requirements, including: currently residing the District of Columbia, be a first time homebuyer, apply for and secure HPAP financing, get homeowners insurance, attend a homeowner education workshop, contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” (assist in the construction of homes), and more.

You also have to meet the DC Habitat annual income requirements:

Help the homeless help themselves, thank you for your support, and tell a friend about Street Sense newspaper.
